Location: Inverness-shire, Scotland
Timeframe: Currently under construction, began in 2019
Our Involvement: Design by Straw Works and Training courses from SNaB
Floor area: 124m2
Construction Method: Loadbearing
This 1.5 storey loadbearing straw building in Inverness-shire, Scotland is a self-build project with training courses and contractor help from SNaB. Owners Ian and Lyn were keen to get stuck in and learn as much as possible throughout the process.
Designed by Straw Works, the building reflects the traditional style of Highland crofts but substitutes the dormer windows for skylights to avoid thermal bridging. It is designed to have glass porches/green house to maximise the benefits of light and sun. The carpentry has been pre-fabricated by Ian and a local carpenter, Lewis, with Lyn helping when she can. The building will sit within the surrounding landscape, with stunning views onto the wild Glen Affric mountains.
