After working on the Lordship EcoHub in Haringey, architect Fran Bradshaw was inspired to build her own house from straw in Hickling, Norfolk in 2013. The design and build of her 2 storey timber frame and infill straw house was a collaborative process; the team comprised Fran herself of Anne Thorne Architects, alongside Barbara who provided consultation and training from Straw Works and a team of volunteers.
Complete with lime rendered and limewashed walls, triple glazed timber windows and a local reed thatch roof, the house was built to passive standards. The house is a testament to the feasibility of blending natural building methods and materials with modern technology. Read more about Fran’s experience of the build here.
