This loadbearing straw bale family home and workshop was designed and built by Straw Works for Grace Jackson in Todmorden, West Yorkshire in 2011.
Surrounded by deciduous woodland, Grace and her family wanted a building that would be harmonious with its natural surroundings whilst providing them with a creative space to continue their passion for art and dance. Locally sourced, natural materials were used as much as possible and cement was totally eliminated from the build as standard.
Oriented to face directly South, with large overhanging eaves, the building maximises passive solar gain and shading whilst utilising renewable energy in the form of photovoltaics, solar hot water panels and heat exchangers.
