Ecology Building Society Meeting Room

Location: Silsden, West Yorkshire
Timeframe: Built in 2005
Our Involvement: Foundation Design and Consultancy
Construction Method: Loadbearing Strawbale

The Ecology Building Society (EBS) has always supported strawbale building and offers mortgages for strawbale houses. They built this beautiful circular meeting room as an annex to their eco headquarters in Silsden, West Yorkshire.  The design of the foundations (by Barbara Jones) was the first modern iteration of traditional cement-free foundations, (old Yorkshire stone buildings all use the same principles) with full planning and Building regulation approval. Built with participation from EBS members with courses by Amazon Nails, and other construction by Dales Contracts, it has a limecrete floor, lime plaster externally and clay internally with a cedar shingle roof.
